Why purchase this United States Norse American Thick Silver Medal minted in 1925?
The Norse American Medal series was produced by the U.S. Mint in 1925, in celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the arrival of the "Restauration," which broughtforty-five Norwegian immigrants to their new North American home. The commemorative medal was designed by James Earle Fraser, creator of the 1913 Buffalo Nickel.
Bold Viking Themed Designs
Obverse: A Norwegian Viking chieftain is illustrated on the obverse confidently advancing forward with a longship in the background. The chief is armed for battle with a shield, sword and svard (dagger), and outfitted in Viking warrior styled armor. Inscribed "NORSE AMERICAN CENTENNIAL," along with the anniversary dates "1825" and "1925."
Reverse: The image of a Viking longship with a dragon head prow and seven side oars graces the reverse, with the inscription "AUTHORIZED BY CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" surrounding the vessel's sail. "A.D. 1000" is inscribed below, in recognition of the date of Viking explorer Leif Erikson's arrival to North America. The final inscription, "OPUS FRASER," is Latin for "Fraser's work."
