Why purchase this $2.50 Gold 1925-D Indian Head Quarter Eagle?

One of the most controversial coins in American history was Bela Lyon Pratt's Indian Head Quarter Eagle. Like the Half Eagle, which had the same detractors, the coin was despised by many due to its incuse designs, which allowed for the buildup of dust and grime. Today, coins like this 1925-D Quarter Eagle are beloved by collectors thanks in large part to their novel designs.

  • This coin was $2.50 legal tender in the United States.
  • This coin was part of a mintage of 578,000 pieces.
  • This piece was struck from 4.18 g of .900 fine gold.
  • This Indian Head bears the Denver Mint's "D" mint mark.
  • The coin features the famous incuse designs of Bela Lyon Pratt.
  • Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) gave this piece a Mint State 64+ grade.
  • The grade comes printed NGC's prestigious Green Label.

Classic Native American Design by Bela Lyon Pratt

Obverse: The obverse, like the reverse, was designed by Bela Lyon Pratt. The obverse features a Native American man in feathered headdress. "LIBERTY" and "1925" are inscribed above and below the image, respectively, while thirteen stars spread throughout the rest of the rim.

Reverse: Two statutory mottoes, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "IN GOD WE TRUST," flank an eagle on the reverse. The bird is perched proudly on arrows that are wrapped in an olive branch. "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" arches over the image, while the coin's face value, "2 1/2 DOLLARS," is noted below. Bela Lyon Pratt was born in Norwich, Connecticut and became a sculptor. This coin and its Half Eagle counterpart are called "the Pratt coins."

Uncirculated MS64+ with Green Label

Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) graded this coin Mint State 64+, thus indicating that it has at least an average strike and shows no traces of wear. Grading information comes on a Green Label, which is a collaboration between Rare Coin Company of America (RARCOA) and NGC. The fact that this coin qualified to carry the Green Label indicates that RARCOA first examined the coin and determined that it met a criteria pertaining to luster, strike, eye-appeal, and toning, before it was then submitted to NGC for grading and encapsulation. Only coins that undergo this two part review earn the right to bear the Green Label.
