Why make this 1924 Silver Peace Dollar the next addition to your collection of precious metal treasures?
The U.S. Mint issued the Silver Peace Dollar series annually from 1921 until 1928, then for two final years in 1934 and 1935. The premise for the coin emerged from a desire to welcome peacetime to the nation following the destruction and chaos of the First World War. A competition for the design of the coin was held by the Federal Commission of Fine Arts. The submission by renowned Italian-American sculptor Anthony de Francisci was unanimously chosen for the coin that would become the nation's final silver dollar minted for circulation.
Spectacular Peace Dollar Design
Obverse: Liberty is personified on the obverse as a young woman in a left facing pose. She wears a stunning radiate style tiara amid wind-swept tresses. De Francisci's wife Teresa served as his inspiration for Ms. Liberty's likeness. Inscribed "LIBERTY," "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "1924."
Reverse: A bald eagle is illustrated standing on the reverse, upon a mountain peak which is engraved with the word "PEACE." The national bird has its gaze intently focused towards the sun rising at the lower right. Additional inscriptions include "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM," and the coin's denomination of "ONE DOLLAR." The absence of a Mint mark is indicative of the coin's Philadelphia Mint origin.
