Why purchase this San Francisco Mint Brilliant Uncirculated 1923-S Silver Peace Dollar?
In 1921, the U.S. Mint concluded its long-running Morgan Silver Dollar series, replacing it with the iconic Silver Peace Dollar. The launch of the Peace Dollar was meant to commemorate victory and the restoration of peace after the First World War, one of the largest and most deadly conflicts in history. Imagery of the Peace Dollar is the work of renowned Italian-American sculptor Anthony de Francisci, the winner of a competition held by federal Commission of Fine Arts in search of a design for the coin that was emblematic of peace.
Gorgeous Interpretation of Peace
Obverse: Lady Liberty is depicted in a left facing pose on the obverse. Her hair is elegantly styled in a twist at the back of her head, with a few loose tresses flowing away from her face. Ms. Liberty wears a stunning radiate tiara inspired by the headdress of the famed Statue of Liberty. The portrait is accompanied by the inscriptions "LIBERTY," "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "1923."
Reverse: The reverse features a bald eagle perched upon a mountain summit adorned with the word "PEACE." The eagle is grasping an olive branch, with its gaze aimed towards the rising sun in the distance. Additional inscriptions include "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "ONE DOLLAR," with the San Francisco Mint mark "S" positioned adjacent to the eagle's tail feathers.
