Why add this 1922-S Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle to your collection?

The U.S. Mint's Double Eagle coin was re-designed in the early 20th century by sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens at the request of President Theodore Roosevelt. The coin's design was intended to express the nation's identity with powerful imagery representing liberty, peace and freedom. This 1922 dated $20 Gold Double Eagle coin, bearing the "S" Mint mark of the San Francisco Mint, was struck from 0.9675 Troy oz. of .900 fine gold with a diameter of 34 mm, its final mintage reported as 2,658,000.

Magnificent Lady Liberty Design

The obverse features Lady Liberty confidently stepping forward with the sun rising behind, an olive branch in her left hand and the torch of freedom held aloft in her right. She is surrounded by 48 stars, the number of states at the time, along with the inscriptions "LIBERTY," "S" and "1922."

The reverse depicts a beautifully detailed eagle flying above rays of a rising sun. "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "TWENTY DOLLARS" curve above the eagle, with "IN GOD WE TRUST" inscribed below.
