Breathtaking Peace Dollar Design
Obverse: A portrait of Lady Liberty facing left is centered on the obverse, as a gentle breeze lifts her hair away from her young face. Ms. Liberty wears a radiate style crown, which is an emblem that has been associated with the mystical powers of the sun since the ancient Egyptian civilizations. Inscribed “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST” and “1922.”
Reverse: A bald eagle stands upon a mountain peak on the reverse, with an olive branch in its grasp, while gazing with hope upon the dawning sun. Inscriptions include “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “ONE DOLLAR” and “PEACE,” with the Denver Mint mark “D” positioned near the eagle’s tail feathers. Design of the Peace Dollar was selected by federal Commission of Fine Arts from submissions to a design competition. The design by Italian-American sculptor Anthony de Francisci, whose wife Teresa served as his inspiration and model for Liberty’s image, was unanimously chosen.
