Why purchase this 1921 Silver Morgan Dollar?
The Morgan Silver Dollar is the most famous coin in American history. Even many people who do not have collections of other coins often have several pieces from these series, which often get passed down from one generation to the next. This 1921 coin comes from a one-year only run of the series, the only issue of the coin after 1904. It was struck from .7734 oz of .900 fine silver at the Denver Mint. The coin will arrive in Extremely Fine condition, which means that it retains complete details.
Featuring George T. Morgan's Historic Liberty Design
George T. Morgan, from whom the coin takes its name, created the designs for both faces of this coin. On the obverse is a left-side portrait of Liberty. Morgan departed from tradition by choosing Anna Willess Williams, an American-style model, rather than following the tradition of depicting Liberty as a Greek-style figure. She has long, curly hair that is partially covered by a Phrygian cap, which identifies her as a freed slave. Also on her head are a ribbon that bears an inscription of her name, "LIBERTY," and a crown made from cotton, a Southern crop, and wheat, a Northern one. Her effigy is encircled by two inscriptions, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "1921," and thirteen stars, one for each of the original states.
A heraldic eagle holds arrows and and an olive branch on the reverse. The arrows serve as reminders to all that America is willing to defend her values, while the olive branch expresses a desire for peace. The bird is partially encircled by an open wreath. Above its head is an inscription of the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST." Rim inscriptions read, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DOLLAR."
