Why make this Gold 1916-S Indian Head Half Eagle $5 coin the next addition to your collection?

The Indian Head Gold Half Eagle series was introduced by the U.S. Mint in 1908. Issued annually through 1916, with one final year of issue more than a decade later in 1929, the series represents the final circulating five dollar denomination coin of the United States. Along with a Quarter Eagle coin of the same design, the coin featured two firsts for the Mint: a rimless design with incused imagery.

  • This Indian Head Gold Half Eagle coin was struck at the San Francisco Mint in 1916.
  • The coin is crafted from 0.2419 Troy oz. of .900 fine gold.
  • The five dollar denomination coin measures 21.60 mm in diameter.
  • The coin is one of only 240,000 minted.

Exceptionally Detailed Imagery

Obverse: The obverse is graced with a portrait of a Native American chief wearing a ceremonial feathered headdress. Thirteen stars, the word "LIBERTY" and the date of issue "1916" encircle the image. The initials "BLP" appear above the date, crediting renowned American sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt with the history-making design.

Reverse: A bundle of arrows entwined with an olive branch is fashioned as a perch for a beautifully detailed bald eagle on the reverse. The U.S. national bird is surrounded by the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "IN GOD WE TRUST," with the coin's face value of "FIVE DOLLARS" curving below. The San Francisco Mint's "S" Mint mark is located near the points of the arrows.
