Why purchase this 1915 $5 Indian Head Gold Half Eagle?

America's Indian Head Coinage is unique in American history thanks to Bela Lyon Pratt's incuse designs. While the fields of other American coinage rises from the surface, the designs on these coins were pressed into the surface. The designs were highly controversial at first, as many believed the coins would pick up dirt and, potentially diseases. This 1915 piece comes from the penultimate issue before the series was discontinued save for one final issue in 1929.

  • This coin was $5 U.S. legal tender.
  • This stunning piece was struck from 8.36 g of .900 fine gold.
  • This piece was part of a mintage of 588,000 pieces.
  • This issue was struck at the Philadelphia Mint.
  • This coin has incuse designs, distinguishing it clearly from other American coinage.
  • Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) graded this piece Mint State 64.
  • The coin was awarded NGC's distinctive Green Label.

Iconic Native American Design by Bela Lyon Pratt

Obverse: Bela Lyon Pratt's obverse design features a Native American man in left-side profile. He wears a feathered headdress. Along the rim are thirteen stars that join two inscriptions, "LIBERTY" and "1915."

Reverse: An eagle is perched proudly on arrows that are wrapped in a branch in Pratt's reverse design. The mottos "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "IN GOD WE TRUST" flank the bird. The name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and the face value of the coin, "FIVE DOLLARS," are inscribed along the rim.

Well Preserved MS64 with Green Label

Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) determined this coin was in the Mint State 64 condition, indicates that this piece has an average or better strike and shows no traces of wear. This piece also qualified to carry NGC's Green Label which was the result of a collaboration between the grading company and one of the leading numismatic distributors in the United States, Rare Coin Company of America (RARCOA). Coins that qualify for the green label are first identified by the experts at RARCOA along a set of strict guidelines, before also being submitted to NGC for further review and grading.
