Why order this $2.5 Gold 1915 Indian Head Quarter Eagle?

Bela Lyon Pratt's famous Indian Head coins are among the most widely recognized historic coins among non-collectors. The reason for this is the fact that their designs are incuse, meaning that they are struck into the coin rather than raised from the surface. This worked poorly for coins in circulation, as dust and other debris often got into the crevices, but it worked well for collectors, because the designs were protected from excessive wear. This Quarter Eagle comes from the last issue of the coin's initial run, 1915. It wasn't struck again until 1925. Part of a mintage of 606,000 pieces, this coin was struck at the Philadelphia Mint from 4.18 g of .900 fine gold.

Iconic Incuse Indian Design by Bela Lyon Pratt

Bela Lyon Pratt created the designs for both faces of this coin. On the obverse is a left-side portrait of a Native American man. He wears a headdress that has long feathers that spread out behind his head. The image is encircled by two inscriptions, "LIBERTY" at the top and the date, "1915," at the bottom, which are joined by thirteen stars, symbols of the original states.

On the reverse, an eagle is perched upon a fasces. The fasces, a powerful symbol of military readiness, has an olive branch, a symbol of peace, wrapped around it. Four inscriptions appear on different parts of this face. The eagle is flanked by the two statutory inscriptions, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "IN GOD WE TRUST." Arching over the image is the name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA." The coin's face value, "2 1/2 DOLLARS," is included att the bottom.

Beautifully Preserved MS62

This coin earned a Mint State 62 grade from the experts at Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). That grade means that a coin has about an average strike and shows no traces of wear.
