Why purchase this 1913 $2.5 Gold Indian Head Quarter Eagle?

In 1908 President Theodore Roosevelt approved an innovative coin design which incorporated two firsts into American coinage. Incuse engraving of imagery and legends, along with the lack of a raised edge, make the Indian Head Quarter Eagle design one of the most distinctive to be produced by the U.S. Mint. The coin was minted from 1908 until 1929, with a break in production caused by the First World War. Minted in Philadelphia, the 1913 issue has a reported mintage of 722,000 coins, struck from 0.1210 Troy oz. of .900 gold, measuring 18 mm in diameter.

Dramatic Designs by Boston Artist Bela Lyon Pratt

The obverse depicts a proud Native American in full headdress surrounded by thirteen engraved stars, with "LIBERTY" inscribed above and "1913" below.

The reverse depicts a magnificent eagle perched upon traditional symbols of war and peace: a bundle of arrows wrapped with an olive branch. Engraved above is "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," with "2 1/2 DOLLARS" below. The motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "IN GOD WE TRUST" are inscribed at the eagle's sides.
