Why order this U.S. 1913-1938 Hobo Nickel with a Bowler Hat design!

This American 1913-1938 Hobo Nickel - Bowler Hat was designed during the period listed but was only carved recently! The hobo nickel is not a coin but rather an art form. It was so named because creating these unique designs was a hobby that hobos could afford and enjoy during the Great Depression. The dates of this design come from the fact that the coin was carved from the images on the Buffalo nickel, which was issued from 1913-1938. The softness of the metal and relatively large surface area made the coin an ideal choice for those engaging in the hobby.

Creative Design

The bulk of the alterations on this particular coin were done on the obverse. The Indian head has been carved into the shape of a hobo wearing a bowler hat. The well defined facial features have been transformed into a mustache and a beard, while the feathers have been stripped away entirely. The sculptor even gave this new figure a name, "BERT," which was left after the other letters in the word "LIBERTY" were worn down. By contrast, relatively little was done to the reverse with the exception of a design being carved into one of the buffalo's front legs.
