The incuse Indian Head design was first used for circulating $5 gold coins in 1908. In 1912, the Indian Head Half Eagle shown here was struck at the Philadelphia Mint. The coin has an actual gold weight of .242 Troy oz.
The design shown on this $5 gold coin was created by Bela Lyon Pratt. One of the main reasons for this design’s popularity is its uniqueness. The detailed portions are actually below the background rather than above. A Native American can be seen on the obverse and a bald eagle is pictured on the reverse.
The Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) uses a 70 point grading scale. When this coin was submitted, it received the grade of Mint State 62. This grade is given to examples that are in uncirculated condition. Some imperfections are present, but they are minor.
