Why does this 1911-S Indian Head Half Eagle $5 gold coin deserve a place in your collection?

In 1908, the U.S. Mint introduced a bold coin style for its Half Eagle series which featured a rimless profile paired with an incuse strike, two characteristics that were new to U.S. coinage. This was the first design change to the denomination in nearly seventy years, minted with imagery honoring the legacy of the Native American nations. The Indian Head Half Eagle coin was produced annually until 1916, then returned for a final, single year of issue in 1929.

  • This 1911-S Indian Head Gold Half Eagle coin is a product of the Mint's San Francisco branch.
  • The coin is crafted from 0.2419 Troy oz. of .900 fine gold.
  • The 21.60 mm diameter coin features a dramatic incuse strike.
  • Final mintage is reported to be 1,416,000 pieces.

Magnificent Half Eagle Design

Obverse: A beautifully rendered, lifelike portrait of a Native American chief wearing a traditional feathered headdress is centered on the obverse. The image is framed by thirteen stars, along with the inscriptions "LIBERTY" and "1911." The initials "BLP" (located near the date) credit acclaimed early 20th century American sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt with the coin's exciting design.

Reverse: An eagle clutches an olive branch on the reverse, while confidently standing upon a bundle of arrows. Inscriptions include "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM," "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "FIVE DOLLARS." The distinctive "S" Mint mark of the San Francisco Mint appears between the arrowheads and the olive branch.
