Why add this 1911-S Gold Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle to your collection?

It might be surprising that a mutual admiration for ancient Greek coins was the genesis for one of the most beautiful U.S. gold coins ever minted. At a dinner party President “Teddy” Roosevelt and sculptor August Saint-Gaudens together plotted to replace American gold coins unchanged for more than half a century with bold and inspiring new designs. The $20 dollar Gold Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle was the result of what Teddy Roosevelt later called his “pet crime”. The 1911-S has a reported mintage of 775,750 coins, contains 0.9675 Troy oz. of .9000 gold, lettered edge, measures 34mm in diameter, and weighs 33.43 grams.

Along the coins edge to reduce clutter is the motto, “E PLURIBUS UNUM”. The obverse depicts a striding Lady Liberty, sun rising behind, the torch of freedom outstretched in her right arm, an olive branch in her left, with 46 stars at the perimeter to represent each state, U.S. Capitol at the lower left. Inscriptions are “LIBERTY”, the date, “S”, and artist’s moniker “ASG”. The reverse depicts a majestic eagle in the likeness of the nation’s emblem soaring above the rays of a rising sun. Inscribed above are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, “TWENTY DOLLARS”, below “IN GOD WE TRUST”.
