1910 Indian Head $5 Gold Half Eagles PCGS MS62
Why does this 1910 Gold Indian Head Half Eagle coin deserve a place in your collection?
In 1908, the U.S. Mint introduced a gold Half Eagle and Quarter Eagle with the same innovative design by Boston sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt. The design style featuring a rimless, incuse strike was a first for the Mint. The coin style was not well received by the public, for fear that germs would collect in the deeply recessed areas of the design; as a result, the series was short-lived, only released for a total of ten years. This 1910 Indian Head Half Eagle coin contains 0.2419 Troy oz. of .900 fine gold.
Exceptionally Detailed Indian Head Design
An Indian chief appears on the obverse wearing a full ceremonial headdress. The portrait is surrounded by thirteen stars along with the inscriptions "LIBERTY" and "1910."
The reverse depicts a bald eagle in a standing pose. A bundle of arrows entwined with an olive branch serves a perch for the stoic bird. The image is accompanied by the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM," "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "FIVE DOLLARS." The lack of a Mint mark confirms that the coin is a product of the Philadelphia Mint.
