Exquisite Design by Augustus Saint-Gaudens

On the obverse is a design that is considered by many the most beautiful ever to appear on a coin. Like the coin itself, it is named for Augustus Saint-Gaudens, its designer. Liberty stands at the center facing the holder. She extends her right hand in front of her, proudly holding her torch, and extends an olive branch off to her side. The rays of the morning sun spread out behind her, making for a truly iconic backdrop. Fifty stars, one for each state, encircle the image, while the Capitol Dome is included in miniature on the left.

An eagle stands perched atop a bunch of arrows on the reverse. Wrapped around the arrows, symbols of military preparedness, is an olive branch, a symbol of peace.
