The U.S. Mint introduced the Indian Head Cent in 1859 and it ran until 1909 when it was replaced by the Lincoln Cent which was first issued as a tribute for the 100th Anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth. The Indian Head Cent features a portrayal of Liberty wearing a Native American headdress designed by the fourth United States Mint Chief Engraver James B. Longacre.

Indian Head Cent Design by James B. Longacre

Obverse: A representation of Liberty wearing a Native American headdress appears on this face of the coin. The inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and the date "1909" surround the portrait.

Reverse: The reverse bears the denomination, "ONE CENT," in the middle of the coin. The inscription is surrounded by an Oak Wreath, while a union shield appears above it. The San Francisco Mint's "S" mint mark also appears on this face of the coin.
