Why add this specially labeled Gold 1909 Indian Head Half Eagle $5 coin to your collection?
The U.S. Mint introduced the Indian Head Gold Half Eagle series in 1908. Featuring a rimless design and an incuse strike, this was an exciting new coin style for the Mint. The public, however, did not agree, voicing their fears that the inset nooks and crannies of the coin's incuse design would be places for germs and disease to gather, and easily transmit with circulation. The series concluded in 1929, after only ten dated years of issue.
Exceptionally Detailed Imagery
Obverse: The obverse portrays a Native American chief wearing a ceremonial feathered headdress. The image is encircled by thirteen stars, with "LIBERTY" inscribed above, "1909" and the artist's initials "BLP" below.
Reverse: A bundle of arrows wrapped with an olive branch serves as a perch for an exquisitely detailed eagle on the reverse. Inscribed "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM," "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "FIVE DOLLARS." Design of the coin is credited to Bela Lyon Pratt, a Boston sculptor who had worked as an assistant in the private studio of Augustus Saint-Gaudens (1907 Double Eagle designer).
