Bela Lyon Pratt's Indian Head coins are among the most famous in American history. They stand out because of their unique incuse designs, which were a controversial feature at the time. This piece was part of just the second issue of the $5 Indian Head coin and would work beautifully either as a standalone piece or part of a collection of American coinage.
Incuse Native American Design by Bela Lyon Pratt
Obverse: Bela Lyon Pratt's obverse design shows a Native American man wearing a feathered headdress. The word "LIBERTY" is inscribed above, while the date, "1909," is included below. The two inscriptions are joined on the rim by thirteen stars.
Reverse: An eagle stands perched upon arrows, The two statutory mottoes, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "IN GOD WE TRUST," are inscribed to the left and right of the bird, respectively. Rim inscriptions provide the name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and the coin's face value, "FINE DOLLARS."
Uncirculated MS62 with Green Label
The experts at Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) graded this piece Mint State 62. That means that it has a slightly weak or average strike and lacks any traces of wear. This coin was also awarded NGC's Green Label which means that it was first identified by numismatic experts at one of the leading coin distributors in the U.S., Rare Coin Company of America (RARCOA), for meeting a set of standards pertaining to strike, toning, luster, and eye-appeal. It was then submitted to NGC for certification and encapsulation. This additional review ensures only coins of exceptional quality earn the right to bear the Green Label.
