Why purchase this "No Motto" 1908 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle?

The U.S. Mint introduced the Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle in 1907, featuring imagery created in a collaborative effort between President Theodore Roosevelt and sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens. This 1908 "No Motto" issue was struck at the Philadelphia Mint from .9675 Troy oz. of .900 fine gold, with a reported final mintage of 4,271,551. Design of the coin was modified to include the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" for the remaining years of the series in August 1908.

Saint-Gaudens' Magnificent Double Eagle Design

The confident figure of Lady Liberty is featured on the obverse, walking forward while carrying an olive branch and a flaming torch, surrounded by forty-six stars representing the number of states in 1908. Inscriptions include "LIBERTY" and "1908."

The reverse depicts a rising sun beneath an intricately detailed eagle in flight, with the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "TWENTY DOLLARS" curving above.
