Why purchase this No Motto 1908 Gold Double Eagle?
The Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle was introduced by the U.S. Mint in 1907, featuring a dramatic design created by sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens. As a result of public outcry over the lack of motto on the original design, the inscription "IN GOD WE TRUST" was incorporated into the reverse image in August 1908. Struck from .9675 Troy oz. of .900 fine gold, this Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle is one of the 4,271,551 coins produced by the Philadelphia Mint in 1908 prior to the addition of the motto.
Impressive Symbolic Design
The obverse features Lady Liberty confidently striding forward while carrying an olive branch and a flaming torch, encircled by forty-six stars representing the number of states at the time of issue. Inscribed "LIBERTY" and "1908."
An eagle is depicted on the reverse, its wings raised in flight as a magnificent expression of freedom, against a background radiating with the sun's rays. Inscribed "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "TWENTY DOLLARS" above.
