Why purchase this "No Motto" 1908 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle coin?
The Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle series was introduced by the U.S. Mint in 1907. Imagery for the series is a result of President Theodore Roosevelt's initiative to re-design coinage of the United States to emulate the beauty of coins produced by the ancient Greeks. He selected acclaimed American sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens for the task, collaborating on the design for the new Double Eagle. When first issued, the coin was void of the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST." Public outcry over the absence of the motto prompted the Mint to add it to the design in August 1908.
Saint-Gaudens' Magnificent Double Eagle Design
Obverse: A stunning rendition of Lady Liberty is featured on the obverse, depicting a young woman confidently marching forward while carrying an olive branch and a flaming torch. Inscriptions include "LIBERTY" and "1908."
Reverse: The reverse illustrates an eagle in flight above the rising sun, with the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "TWENTY DOLLARS" sweeping overhead.
