Why purchase this No Motto 1908-P Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle coin?

The U.S. Mint introduced the Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle series in 1907. Design of the coin was a collaborative effort between President Theodore Roosevelt and American sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, one of the most renowned American sculptors of the era. When first released in 1907, the coin's design did not include the national motto "In God We Trust." The public's displeasure over the motto's omission prompted the Mint to incorporate it into the design in August 1908. This 1908 dated example of the series is one of those minted prior to that design alteration.

  • This Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle No Motto coin was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 1908.
  • The coin is crafted from 0.9675 Troy oz. of .900 fine gold.
  • The coin measures 34 mm in diameter.
  • "E PLURIBUS UNUM" is lettered on the coin's edge.
  • The coin was awarded the NGC's prestigious Green Label.
  • Final mintage of the distinctive "No Motto" 1908 release is reported to be 4,271,551.

Saint-Gaudens' Beautiful Double Eagle Design

Obverse: Lady Liberty is depicted as a young woman on the obverse, confidently marching forward while carrying an olive branch and a flaming torch. In the background, the sun's rays glow above the dome of the U.S. Capitol Building. Forty-six stars surround Ms. Liberty, representing the number of states in the union in 1908. Inscriptions include "LIBERTY" and "1908."

Reverse: The reverse illustrates an eagle in flight above the rising sun, symbolizing the powerful themes of strength and freedom. The inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "TWENTY DOLLARS" sweep overhead.
