Why add the 1908-P Saint-Gaudens $20 Gold Double Eagles NGC MS64 Green Label to your collection?

Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) graded this 1908-P Saint-Gaudens $20 Gold Double Eagle at the solid Mint State 64 (MS64) level.

  • This is an early sought after Philadelphia struck issue in the series.
  • The "no motto" type is highly prized and widely collected for type.
  • The series was struck on .9675 oz. 90% fine gold planchets.
  • The series was designed by numismatic legend Augustus Saint-Gaudens.

Timeless Saint-Gaudens Design

Obverse: The Double Eagle obverse features the most beautiful image of Liberty ever struck in gold by the U.S. Mint. She is featured standing majestically, her hair and robes flowing in the wind. She holds the Torch of Freedom and an olive branch of Peace.

Reverse: An eagle in flight, bathed in the rays of the rising sun graces the reverse. There are two versions of this reverse, the early "no motto" and later "with motto" type that characterized the series until completion. The President Teddy Roosevelt, a religious man, requested that the motto "In God We Trust" be omitted from the reverse because money could be used for immoral purposes, like gambling or intemperate behavior. He felt that the inclusion of the motto was wrong and sacrilegious. After public outrage caused Congress to act, the motto was included on the series from late 1908 until 1933. This is the reason for the 1908 "no motto" coin's enduring popularity: it is the only widely available "no motto" version of the coin.

MS64 Green Label

MS64 coins are uncirculated examples with good mint luster and possibly some slight, non-distracting contact marks due to the storage of the coins in bags in bank vaults. This stunning example was awarded NGC's Green Label which means that prior to certification and encapsulation at NGC, this piece was selected by RARCOA for having elements such as stunning eye-appeal, razor-sharp strike, booming luster, or visually attractive toning. Only coins that have first undergone RARCOA's review before also meeting NGC's standards for authentication and certification qualify to carry NGC's Green Label.
