Why add this 1908 Liberty Head $5 Gold Half Eagle coin to your collection?

The $5 Liberty Head Half Eagle gold coin was annually issued by the U.S. Mint from 1839 until 1908. The coin was designed by Christian Gobrecht just prior to his appointment as the Mint's third Chief Engraver in 1840. Imagery remained primarily unchanged for the duration of the series, with a modification to the inscriptions in 1866, when the motto "In God We Trust" was added to the reverse as a means to generate hope for the nation's future after the American Civil War.

  • This final year of issue 1908 Liberty Head Half Eagle is a Philadelphia Mint product.
  • The 21.60 mm diameter coin is struck from 0.2419 Troy oz. of .900 fine gold.
  • The coin is accompanied by the NGC's exciting Green Label.
  • The coin is one of only 421,874 minted.

Classic Depiction of Lady Liberty

Obverse: Thirteen stars encircle a left facing interpretation of Lady Liberty on the obverse. Inscriptions include "LIBERTY" upon the young woman's coronet, and the year of issue "1908."

Reverse: Centered on the reverse is a heraldic eagle grasping three arrows and an olive branch. Inscribed "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "FIVE D."

Stunning Mint State 63

This 1908 Liberty Head $5 Gold Half Eagle coin was submitted to the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) for review. The coin was awarded the impressive grade of Mint State 63 for its sharp strike, substantial degree of original Mint luster and fantastic eye appeal. The gold coin is presented in a sonically sealed protective holder with the NGC's green style certification label. The Green Label was established to recognize a unique partnership between the NGC and the Rare Coin Company of America (RARCOA). To qualify for the Green Label, before the coin was graded by the NGC, it first satisfied a comprehensive list of standards regarding strike, tone, luster and eye appeal, which was independently created by a team of numismatic industry experts at RARCOA.
