Why purchase this 1908-1929 $2.50 Gold Indian Head Quarter Eagle?

The 1908-1929 $2.50 Gold Indian Head is among the most famous coins in American history. It is set apart from the rest in that the design was incuse, meaning that the design was struck into the surface of the coin rather than raised from it. Each coin was struck from 4.18 g of .900 fine gold. While prized by collectors today, the coin frustrated many of those who used it in circulation because of the dust and other matter that got into its crevices. Each piece ordered from this page will arrive in Brilliant Uncirculated condition.

Unique Indian Head Design by Bela Lyon Pratt

Both faces of the coin bear designs of Bela Lyon Pratt. On the obverse is a left-side portrait of an aging Native American man. He has distinct facial features and wears a feathered headdress, the feathers of which extend backwards. He is encircled by two inscriptions, "LIBERTY" and the date, "and thirteen stars, which symbolize the original states.

On the reverse, an eagle stands perched upon arrows. The eagle strikes a proud pose with its wings in by its sides. The arrows, symbols of America's willingness to stand up for her values, are wrapped in an olive branch, which indicates a desire for peace. The two statutory mottoes, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "IN GOD WE TRUST," are inscribed to the left and right of the eagle. Rim inscriptions note the name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and the coin's face value, "2 1/2 DOLLARS."
