Why add the 1904 $20 Gold Liberty Head Double Eagle - NGC MS63 to your collection?
This 1904 $20 Gold Liberty Head Double Eagle was given the Mint State 63 grade from the experts at the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). The Liberty Head or Coronet Double Eagle series was stuck as a pattern coin in 1849 and for circulation from 1850 through 1907. This example was struck at the famous Philadelphia branch of the U.S. Mint and contains .9675 oz. of gold.
Struck in 1904, this piece was issued in a year that saw Henry Ford set a new automobile land speed record of 91.37 mph and the start of construction on the Panama Canal. It was a big year for sports too as the first perfect game in baseball history was pitched by Boston American's hurler Cy Young and the Third Modern Olympic games in St. Louis were held as part of the World's Fair.
Classic "Type 3" reverse design
The coin was originally designed by James B. Longacre. The obverse features the portrait of Liberty facing left. The reverse features one of the most spectacular images in all of American coinage: a magnificent heraldic eagle. The eagle is featured beneath the phrase "In God We Trust." The inclusion of that controversial phrase and the fully spelled out "Twenty Dollars" on the rim constitute the major changes from the previous design. At the time, devout people objected to "In God We Trust" because money could be used for "wicked" activities like drinking and gambling.
Graded Mint State 63 by NGC
