1903 New Orleans Morgan Silver Dollar
For quite some time the 1903 O Morgan dollar was thought to be the rarest of them all. Things have changed today, but that doesn't mean that this coin isn't impressive. Morgan dollars from the New Orleans Mint varied in quality, but a respectable number of them had sharp details and a great proof-like finish.
The rarity of the 1903-O Morgan dollar is an interesting subject. At one point, this coin was thought to be the rarest of all Morgan dollars. Very few of these silver dollars could be found and it was thought that the majority of them were melted instead of going into circulation. In the mid-1900s, 1903-O Morgans were discovered by the thousands. Bags full of them that had never been touched had been forgotten or overlooked in government storage. These uncirculated specimens quickly went to the collector market and make up the vast majority of 1903-Os that are available today.
This coin received the grade of MS64. This is a high and very respectable grade. A protective PCGS holder houses the coin. It is also non-reactive and will preserve this silver dollar while it stays protected.
1903 New Orleans Silver Dollar Design
While many people recognize this coin by George T. Morgan's design of Liberty on the front, both sides display very visually appealing designs. The "O" mintmark of the New Orleans Mint can be found on the reverse, just above the words "ONE DOLLAR." This side features a bald eagle that is partially surrounded by a wreath. "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "IN GOD WE TRUST," are inscribed on the coin.
On the front of the coin, Liberty is shown wearing a cap. Her hair is a main feature of this design and is very detailed. The border is made of the words "E PLURIBUS UNUM," 13 stars, and the date, "1903."
The 1903-O Morgan dollar will always be appreciated by collectors. Order this PCGS MS64 coin for your collection while you can!
