Why purchase this 1903-O Silver Morgan Dollar?
The 1903-O Morgan was once considered the key to the most beloved coin series in American history. With the Treasury vault sales of the 1960's, though, the issue became more readily available. In states above MS64, though, the coin becomes much harder to find. That makes this piece a particularly appealing option. Part of a mintage of 4,450,000 pieces, this coin was struck from 26.73 g of .900 fine silver. It bears the "O" mint mark of the New Orleans Mint.
Striking LIberty Design by George T. Morgan
George T. Morgan, for whom this coin is named, desiegned both of its faces. On the obverse is a left-side portrait of Liberty. Morgan modeled the figure off of Anna Willess Williams, an American style figure. This was a departure from the tradition of using Greek style models for Liberty. On her head is a Phrygian cap, which indicates that she is a freed slave. She also wears a ribbon that bears her name, "LIBERTY," and a crown made from cotton, a Southern crop, and wheat, a Northern one. Arching over the effigy is the inscription "E PLURIBUS UNUM," while the date, "1903," is included below it. Those two inscriptions are joined by thirteen stars, one for each of the original states.
A heraldic eagle stretches its wings within an open wreath on the reverse. The bird holds arrows, symbols of America's willingness to defend her values, and an olive branch, which expresses a desire for peace. Above its head is an inscription of the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST." "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DOLLAR" are inscribed along the rim.
Uncirculated MS64
