Why purchase this Morgan 1903-O Silver Dollar?
This 1903-O Silver Morgan Dollar comes from the second to last mintage of the original run of the series. It comes from the South's New Orleans Mint, an important feature given that the coin helped to reunite a divided nation not long after its bloody Civil War. Part of a mintage of 4,450,000 pieces, this coin bears an "O" mint mark on the reverse. It was struck from .7734 oz of .900 fine silver and will arrive in Brilliant Uncirculated condition.
Stunning Liberty Design by George T. Morgan
George T. Morgan, who lends his name to this iconic series, designed both faces of this coin. On the obverse is a left-side portrait of Liberty. Morgan broke with the tradition of depicting her as a Greek-style figure, instead choosing Anna Willess Williams, an American-style figure, as his model. Liberty has long, curly hair that is partially covered by a Phrygian cap, which identifies her as a freed slave. She also wears a crown made from one Southern crop, cotton, and one Northern one, wheat. She also wears a ribbon that bears an inscription of her name, "LIBERTY." Her effigy is encircled by thirteen stars, which represent the original states, the motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM," and the date, "1903.."
On the reverse is an eagle, which spreads its wings while holding arrows and an olive branch in its talons. The arrows serve as reminders to all that America is prepared to defend its values, while the olive branch represents a desire for peace. Under the bird is an open wreath. The national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is inscribed above the eagle's head. "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DOLLAR" are inscribed along the rim.
