Gorgeous Imagery Representing Liberty and Freedom
Lady Liberty is portrayed on the obverse facing left, wearing a Phrygian cap with "LIBERTY" inscribed upon the headband. The Phrygian cap has been a symbol of freedom and the pursuit of liberty since the civilizations of ancient Rome. The portrait is framed by thirteen stars signifying the original colonies, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "1903."
An eagle is centered on the reverse holding an olive branch and three arrows, with a laurel wreath below, representations of freedom, peace and strength. Inscriptions include "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "ONE DOLLAR" and "IN GOD WE TRUST," with Morgan's initial "M" appearing on the wreath's ribbon.
