Why purchase this 1903 Silver Morgan Dollar?
This 1903 Morgan comes from the penultimate issue of the original run in the series. Uniquely, the coin was released again in 1921 for one year only. The series is a favorite among collectors and non-collectors alike, with individual coins and collections of them often being passed down for generations. This coin was struck on a .7734 troy oz planchet of .900 fine silver at the Philadelphia Mint. Unlike business strikes from the other mints, this piece does not have a mint mark.
Featuring George T. Morgan's Iconic Liberty Design
George T. Morgan, for whom this series is named, designed both faces of this coin. On the obverse is a left-side portrait of Liberty. Morgan used Anna Willess Williams as his model for the allegorical figure, and in doing so he departed from the tradition of portraying Liberty in the Greek style. Williams was an American style model. Her long, curly hair is partially covered by a Phrygian cap, which is traditionally worn by freed slaves. Also on her head is a crown that represents unity, which was important in the wake of the Civil War. It consists of cotton, a Southern crop, and wheat, a Northern one. Thirteen stars, one for each of the original states, join the inscriptions "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "1903" on the rim.
The national bird, an eagle, features on the reverse. Partially encircled by an open wreath, it holds symbols of American might, arrows, and a desire for peace, an olive branch, in its talons. Its wings stretch upward and outward toward the rim, and the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is inscribed within the V-shape that they form. Rim inscriptions offer the coin's country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and face value, "ONE DOLLAR."
Beautifully Maintained MS62
The experts at Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) awarded this coin an Uncirculated grade of Mint State 62. That grade means that it shows no traces of wear and has about an average strike.
