Why purchase this 1902-O Silver Morgan Dollar?

The Morgan Silver Dollar is prized among collectors and non-collectors alike as an iconic piece of Americana. First released shortly after the end of the Civil War, the coin helped to unify and forge an identity for a divided nation. This piece comes from near the end of its initial run. It bears the "O" mint mark of the New Orleans Mint, where it was struck from .7734 oz of .900 fine silver. This coin is part of a mintage of 8,636,000 pieces.

Classic Liberty Design by George T. Morgan

Both faces of this coin bear the designs of George T. Morgan. On the obverse is a left-side portrait of Liberty. She appears as an American-style figure in a break from the tradition of depicting her as a Greek style figure. On her head are a crown, a ribbon, and a cap. The crown represents national unity, as it consists of cotton, a Southern crop, and wheat, a Northern one. The ribbon bears an inscription of her name, "LIBERTY." The Phrygian cap, which covers much of her long, curly hair, indicates that she is a freed slave. Her effigy is encircled by thirteen stars, which represent the original states, and two inscriptions, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "1902."

On the reverse, an open wreath partially encircles a heraldic eagle. The bird has its head turned to the left side of this face and spreads its wings toward the rim. In its talons are arrows, symbols of America's willingness to defend her values, and an olive branch, which represents a desire for peace. Above the eagle's head is an inscription of the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST." Two inscriptions on the rim note the name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and the coin's face value, "ONE DOLLAR."

Well Maintained MS66
