Why does this Mint State 1902 Gold Liberty Head Quarter Eagle $2.50 coin belong in your collection?

The longest running series of American $2.50 denomination gold coinage, the Liberty Head Quarter Eagle, was issued from 1840 until 1907 by the U.S. Mint featuring a design created by Christian Gobrecht. The identical personification of Liberty also appeared on the $5 half eagle and the $10 eagle coins. Minted from 0.1209 Troy oz. of .900 fine gold, this Liberty Head Quarter Eagle coin measures 18 mm in diameter. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 1902 with no Mint mark, the coin is counted among the final reported mintage of 133,540.

Gorgeous Lady Liberty Design

The obverse depicts Lady Liberty as a young woman facing left, wearing a coronet inscribed "LIBERTY," her hair bound by a string of pearls, with several loose tendrils curling down her neck. The portrait is surrounded by thirteen six-pointed stars and date of issue "1902."

The reverse features a heraldic eagle with a Union Shield at its breast, clutching an olive branch and bundle of arrows. The image is encircled by the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "2 1/2 D."
