Why purchase this 1901-O Silver Morgan Dollar?
The Morgan Silver Dollar Series is among the most iconic in American history. Its designs brought a divided nation together in the wake of the Civil War. This coin was struck in the old South at the New Orleans Mint, which is represented by an "O" mint mark. It was part of a mintage of 13,320,000 pieces and will arrive in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. Like other Morgans, this coin was struck on a .7734 oz planchet of .900 fine silver.
Classic Liberty Design by George T. Morgan
Both faces of this coin bear the name of designer George T. Morgan, from whom the series takes its name. The obverse features a left-side portrait of Liberty. Morgan depicted Liberty in an American style, breaking with the tradition of depicting her as a Greek-style figure. She dons a crown of cotton and wheat, a Southern crop and a Northern one. Also on her head is a Phrygian cap, which covers some of her long, curly hair. "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "1901" are inscribed along the rim, joining 13 stars, which represent the original states.
On the reverse, an eagle clutches arrows and an olive branch, symbols of America's willingness to defend its values and a desire for peace. The national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is inscribed above the bird's head, and a wreath partially encircles the creature. Rim inscriptions provide the name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and the face value of the coin, "ONE DOLLAR."
