Why add this 1901-O Silver Morgan Dollar to your collection?
The Morgan Silver Dollar has long been a favorite series of coin collectors and non-collectors alike. Coming from an important time in American history, the series represents unity and patriotism. This piece was part of one of the final issues. It bears the "O" mint mark of the New Orleans Mint, where it was struck on a .7734 oz planchet of .900 fine silver. It is part of a mintage of 13,320,000 pieces and will arrive in Almost Uncirculated condition.
Featuring George T. Morgan's Patriotic Liberty Design
George T. Morgan, who lends his name to this coin, designed both of its faces. On the obverse is his historic Liberty design, in which he depicts the figure in an American-style, rather than the traditional Greek-style. Shown in left-side profile, the figure has long, curly hair. Much of it is covered by her Phrygian cap, which identifies her as a freed slave. She also wears a ribbon that bears an inscription of her name, "LIBERTY," and a crown. The crown is a symbol of national unity, as it consists of one Southern crop, cotton, and one Northern one, wheat. The image is encircled by two inscriptions, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "1901," and thirteen stars, which represent the original states.
A heraldic eagle holds arrows and an olive branch on the reverse. The arrows serve as reminders to all that America is willing to defend its values, while the olive branch indicates a desire for peace. The bird is partially encircled by an open wreath, and the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is inscribed above its head. Inscriptions along the rim note the name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and the face value of the coin, "ONE DOLLAR."
