Why buy this 1901 Silver Morgan Dollar?
The 1901 Morgan is a fascinating issue in America's most iconic series. Few of these coins circulated on the east coast, so many were lost to the melting of the Pittman Act. Accordingly, this About Uncirculated 53 piece is an extremely attractive option, as uncirculated examples command exceptionally high premiums. This coin was struck from .7734 oz of .900 fine silver at the Philadelphia Mint. It was part of a mintage of 6,962,000 pieces.
Featuring the Novel Liberty Design of George T. Morgan
This coin takes its name from George T. Morgan, who designed both of its faces. On the obverse is a left-side portrait of Liberty. She dons a Phrygian cap that identifies her as a freed slave. Also on her head are a ribbon that bears her name and a crown of cotton and wheat. The crown represents national unity, as cotton is a Southern crop and wheat is a Northern one. Thirteen stars represent the original states on the rim. They link two inscriptions, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "1901."
An eagle spreads its wings while clutching arrows and an olive branch on the reverse. The arrows remind all that America is prepared to defend her values, while the olive branch indicates a desire for peace. An open wreath partially encircles the bird. Between the eagle's wings is an inscription of the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST." "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DOLLAR" are inscribed along the rim.
Well Preserved AU53
The experts at Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) certified that this coin is in Almost Uncirculated 53 condition. That means that it has slight wear on more than half of the design but retains full details save for minor softness on the high points.
