Why order this Morgan 1900-O Silver Dollar?
No coins series in American history comes close to the Morgan Silver Dollar in terms of its place in the psyche of the nation. These coins frequently pass from one generation to the next, and even non-collectors often have at least a few of these stashed away. This piece comes from the final run of the 19th century. It was struck from .7734 oz of .900 fine silver and bears the "O" mint mark of the New Orleans Mint. The coin will arrive in Brilliant Uncirculated condition.
Exquisite Liberty Design by George T. Morgan
This coin takes its name from the man who designed both faces of it, George T. Morgan. His obverse design broke from the long standing tradition of depicting Liberty as a Greek-style figure, as Morgan instead showed her as an American-style figure. She wears a ribbon that bears an inscription of her name, "LIBERTY," and Phrygian cap, which identifies her as a freed slave, and a crown of cotton and wheat. This was particularly important early in the series, as it represented a unified nation shortly after the Civil War. This is because it consisted of one Northern crop and one Southern one. Thirteen stars, symbols of the original states, join the inscriptions "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "1900" in encircling the image along the rim.
On the reverse, the national bird, an eagle, holds arrows and an olive branch while stretching its wings toward the edge. The arrows symbolize America's willingness to stand up for her values. The olive branch expresses a desire for peace. Arching under the eagle is an open wreath, and above its head is the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST." The name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," joins the coin's face value, "ONE DOLLAR," on the rim.
