Why purchase this 1900 Silver Morgan Dollar?
Own a piece of America's best known historic coin series from the final issue of the 19th century with this 1900 Silver Dollar. The Morgan series is an important part of American history, as it combines symbols of identity and unity for a country that was ravaged by the Civil War not long before it was first issued. Like other Morgans, this piece was struck from .7734 oz of .900 fine silver. It was one of 8.83 million pieces of its kind struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 1900.
Featuring the Famous Liberty Design of George T. Morgan
This coin takes its name from its designer, George T. Morgan. Morgan modeled his obverse design, a left-side portrait of Liberty, after Anna Willess Williams. Williams was an American-style figure, a sharp contrast to the Greek-style figures who had served as previous models for Liberty. She wears a ribbon that bears an inscription of her name, a crown, and a Phrygian cap. The cap identifies her as a freed slave, while the crown, which is constituted by cotton and wheat, represents unity. This is because cotton is a Southern crop and wheat is a Northern one. Inscriptions along the rim include a statutory motto, "E PLURIBUS UNUM," and the date, "1900." Joining the two inscriptions are thirteen stars, which represent the original states.
On the reverse, an eagle spreads its wings wide. Between them is an inscription of the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST." In the eagle's talons are arrows, symbols of America's willingness to defend its values, and an olive branch, a symbol of peace. An open wreath partially encircles the bird, running from just under one wing to just under the other. Framing this image along the rim are a pair of inscriptions, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DOLLAR."
The experts at Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) ) awarded this coin a grade of Mint State 63. That grade is given to coins that have about average strikes and have no traces of wear.
