Why order this 1900 Silver Morgan Dollar?
No collection of American coins is complete without at least one piece from the iconic Morgan Silver Dollar Series. Although the series had a short run relative to many other coins in the country's history, it holds a treasured place in the nation's history. This is partially because of its unifying characteristics. This coin is part of a mintage of 8.83 million pieces, each one struck at the Philadelphia Mint from .7734 oz of .900 fine silver. The coin will arrive in Brilliant Uncirculated condition.
Classic Liberty Design by George T. Morgan
One of the many reasons for the popularity of the Morgan, which gets its name from its designer, George T. Morgan, is that Liberty was depicted as an American-style figure. Previously, the tradition was to show her as a Greek-style figure. She faces left wearing a crown of cotton and wheat, a symbol of unity as it is one Southern crop and one Northern one. She also wears a ribbon that bears an inscription of her name and a Phrygian cap, which identifies her as a freed slave. Her image is encircled by the motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM," the date, "1900," and thirteen stars, which represent the original states.
On the reverse, an eagle turns its head to the left while spreading its wings and holding arrows and an olive branch. Arrows serve as reminders that America is prepared to defend her values. The olive branch indicates a preference for peace. Partially encircling the bird is an open wreath. The national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is inscribed between its wings. Inscriptions along the rim note the name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and the face value of the coin, "ONE DOLLAR."
