Iconic Liberty Design by Christian Gobrecht

Obverse: A youthful Liberty features in left-side profile in Christian Gobrecht's obverse design. The figure's hear is held back in a bun, and on her head is a coronet that bears an inscription of her name, "LIBERTY." Thirteen stars spread throughout most of the rim, leaving space for an inscription of the date, "1900," at the bottom.

Reverse: Gobrecht's reverse design features an eagle spreading its wings as it guards a union shield. In its talons are arrows and an olive branch, symbols of military readiness and peace, and above its head is a ribbon that bears an inscription of the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST." Rim inscriptions note the issuing country's name, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and the face value of the coin, "FIVE D."
