Designed by U.S. Mint Assistant Engraver George T. Morgan, the Silver Morgan Dollar was introduced by the Mint in 1878. The series was minted continuously through 1904, followed by a return for a single year of issue in 1921. Struck in Louisiana at the New Orleans Mint in 1899 from 0.7734 Troy oz. of .900 fine silver, this coin measures 38.1 mm in diameter and is among a final reported mintage of 12,290,000.
Beautiful Silver Dollar Design
Lady Liberty is depicted on the obverse wearing a Phrygian cap, a traditional symbol signifying the pursuit of liberty. Her hair is embellished with varied leaves and blossoms held in position by a "LIBERTY" inscribed crown. The image is encircled by thirteen stars, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "1899."
A heraldic eagle adorns the reverse, with three arrows and an olive branch clasped in its talons. Inscriptions include "IN GOD WE TRUST," "ONE DOLLAR," "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and the "O" Mint mark representing the New Orleans Mint.
