The coin was struck in a year that saw the births of several famous figures, including Ernest Hemingway, Fred Astaire, Duke Ellington, and James Cagney, as well as infamous crime boss Al Capone. Classic Liberty Design by Christian Gobrecht
Obverse: Christian Gobrecht's obverse design features a left-side portrait of Liberty. The youthful figure dons a coronet that bears an inscription of her name, "LIBERTY," while her hair is held back in a bun. The coin's date, "1899," is inscribed at the bottom of this face, while thirteen stars spread throughout the rest of the rim.
Reverse: On the reverse, an eagle spreads its wings while guarding a union shield and holding arrows and an olive branch. Rim inscriptions note the name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and an abbreviation of the coin's face value, "2 1/2 D."
Beautifully Maintained MS66 with Green Label
Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) graded this piece Mint State 66. Coins in MS66 condition were struck very well. This piece also qualified to carry NGC's Green Label which was the product of a collaboration between NGC and one of the leading numismatic distributors in the United States, Rare Coin Company of America (RARCOA). A coin must first be selected by RARCOA for meeting a set of strict guidelines referencing strike, luster, toning, and eye-appeal, before then being submitted to NGC for further review and grading.
