Why purchase this $10 Gold 1899 Liberty Head Eagle?

This turn of the century Gold Liberty Head Eagle is ideal for collectors who love coins from historically significant years. The coin features classic designs from American numismatic history. It was part of a mintage of 1,262,219 pieces. It was struck in Philadelphia on a 16.72 g planchet of .900 fine gold.

Patriotic Liberty Head Design by Christian Gobrecht

Both faces of the coin bear the designs of Christian Gobrecht, whose artistry donned American coinage for more than half a century. She is depicted as a poised young figure on the obverse. On her head is a coronet on which there is an inscription of her name, "LIBERTY." Her hair is knotted in the back, and some curls hang down. The date, "1899," is inscribed below her bust, and thirteen stars, symbols of the original states, spread throughout the rest of the rim.

An eagle spreads its wings to the side as it guards a union shield on the back. In one talon, it holds an olive branch, a traditional sign of peace. In the other, it clutches arrows, which symbolizes America's willingness to defend her values. "IN GOD WE TRUST" is inscribed on a ribbon above the bird's head.
