Why add this pair of South African Mint Lost Hoard gold coins to your collection?
This beautiful Lost Hoard set from the South African Mint celebrates an amazing discovery of hoarded South African cold coinage struck in the late 19th century. The collection of 910 coins (677 1 Pond coins and 233 1/2 Pond coins) was remarkably found in an original Mint-branded bag in a bank vault in Switzerland. The coins were thought to have been destroyed during the British occupation of South Africa in the early 1900s. This set includes two coins, an 1898 1 Pond gold coin from the hoard and a 2019 1/4 oz. Gold Krugerrand proof coin featuring a privy mark honoring the Lost Hoard's historic discovery.
- Struck from 0.2352 Troy oz. of .9167 fine gold, the 22 mm diameter 1898 1 Pond coin hails from a 137,000 piece mintage.
- The 2019 dated 22 mm diameter proof Krugerrand contains 1/4 Troy oz. of .9167 fine gold.
- Only 677 1/4 oz. Krugerrand coins were produced with the specially designed Lost Hoard privy mark.
Designs Celebrating the Legacy of Paul Kruger
Obverse: The first South African president, Paul Kruger, is depicted on the obverse of each coin, with a declaration of the issuing nation curving above: "ZUID AFRIKANNSCHE REPUBLIEK" on the Pond, with "SUID-AFRIKA" and "SOUTH AFRICA" on the Krugerrand.
Reverse Imagery: The South African Republic's heraldic Coat of Arms is featured on the Pond's reverse. The Arms includes the inscription "EENDRAGT MAAKT MAGT," which translates as the Dutch motto "Union makes strength." Inscribed "1 POND" and "1898" above. The reverse of the Krugerrand replicates the springbok antelope design which first appeared on the 1948 South African five shilling coin. "THE LOST HOARD" privy mark is located above the leaping creature. Inscriptions include "1/4 KRUGERRAND," "2019," and "FYNGOUD 1/4 OZ FINE GOLD."
