Why purchase this 2-Coin Lost Hoard Set South Africa 1 Pond + 1/4 oz Gold Krugerrand?
Tensions ran high in South Africa in the late 19th century and the second Anglo-Boer War ensued. Many people and institutions sought safety in the Netherlands. A parcel of 910 Kruger Ponds was thought to be sent to the Netherlands, from which it was sent to Switzerland before World War II. The coins remained in a vault for decades and were recently sold at auction. The coins together became known as the Lost Hoard, and the full details of their story may never be known.
Classic South African Crest Design
Krugerrand: On the obverse of the Krugerrand is a left-side portrait of Paul Kruger, the third President of the South African Republic. He is joined by inscriptions of the name of the country in Afrikaans, "SUID-AFRIKA," and English, "SOUTH AFRICA." A springbok antelope, the country's national symbol, bounds across the plains on the reverse. Teh reverse also features the Lost Hoard privy mark, which is joined by inscriptions of the coin's name, "1/4 KRUGERRAND," its date, "2019," and its weight in Afrikaans and English, "FYNGOUD 1/4 OZ FINE GOLD."
Pond: The Pond's obverse bears the same portrait on the obverse. In this case, though, the inscription is just in Afrikaans, "ZUID AFRIKANNSCHE REPUBLIEK." An eagle spreads its wings while perched on the nation's crest on the reverse. Inscriptions note the coin's value, "1 POND," and date, "1898."
Well Preserved MS61 with Tumi Signed Label
The experts at Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) awarded the Pond a grade of Mint State 61. That grade indicates that a coin has a weak to average strike and lacks any traces of wear. This grade comes on a label that has been hand signed by the former director of the South African Mint, Tumi Tsehlo. Both the certified pond and uncertified Krugerrand will arrived in a special wooden display case that houses both pieces and will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from the mint, a story book about the Lost Hoard, and a reproduction of the mint bag in which the hoard was discovered.
