Striking Liberty Design by George T. Morgan
Obverse: The coin's obverse, like the reverse, was designed by George T. Morgan. The obverse bears a left-side portrait of Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap and a ribbon. Morgan's choice of an American-style model rather than a Greek-style model was a break from tradition. The image is encircled by thirteen stars and the inscriptions "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "1898."
Reverse: On the reverse, an eagle holds arrows and an olive branch. The bird stretches its wings toward the rim and is partially encircled by an open wreath. The national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is inscribed above its head, while the name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and the face value, "ONE DOLLAR," are inscribed along the rim. George T. Morgan was the seventh Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. He is best known for his Half Dollar.
