Design of the 1898-S Gold Coronet

The Liberty is featured at the center of the obverse of the 1898-S Gold Coronet. Facing the left side of the coin, she is portrayed in a Greco-Roman style. With her hair held back in a bun save for some that falls down to cover the back of her neck, she carries a coronet on her head. It carries her name, “LIBERTY”, which is inscribed almost vertically. The tip of the coronet is located between the sixth and seventh of thirteen stars that adorn the rim of the coin, a nod to the original states. The location of the tip of the headpiece is a change from the two previous types of the coin, in which the headpiece nearly touched the seventh star. Another change from the first two types of this coin is that Liberty’s neck is sharply truncated, a change that allowed more space for the date, “1898”, which is inscribed under it. The reeded edge provides a beautiful frame for the entire image.

The inscription, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, arches slightly more than halfway around the reverse, stretching equidistantly out from the top. Separated from that inscription with a small space on either side are the words, “TWENTY DOLLARS”, the elongated version of the original, “TWENTY D.” that was used on the first two types of gold coronets. The main design on the reverse consists of an eagle holding a ribbon that bears the same words found on the Great Seal of the United States, “E PLURIBUS UNUM”, which is separated by the eagle between the second and third words. Covering the body of the eagle is the shield that it guards, which has downward stripes and represents the country. The bird’s wings are spread widely, with the wings pointing to the “E”s in the words, “UNITED” and “AMERICA”. In one of its talons, it holds arrows, while in the other, it has an olive branch, a popular symbol of peace. Over the birds head is the inscription, “IN GOD WE TRUST”, which is encircled by thirteen stars. Stretching over the halo and spanning from one wing to the other are rays. Beneath the eagle, the coin’s Mint mark, an “S”, indicates that it was struck at the United States Mint in San Francisco.

The blue and white label provided in the slab of this graded coin covers the basic information about it, including the year of mintage with the Mint mark, “1898-S”, the face value, “$20”, the grader, “PCGS” (Professional Coin Grading Service), and the grade, “MS62”. For those who want to verify the authenticity of the coin and grade, a certification number and bar code appear on the front. There is also a QR code on the back for those who want to use smartphones to authenticate it.
