Why purchase this 1898-O Toned Morgan Silver Dollar?
Collectors looking for a well preserved Morgan would do well to pick up this 1898-O piece. The coin was well represented in the General Services Administration Hoard, so examples in mid-range Mint State are well represented. This piece stands out, though, for its attractive toning. When you order from this page, you will receive the exact coin depicted here. Like other Morgans, this coin was struck from .7734 oz of .900 fine silver. Part of a mintage of 4,440,000, it bears the "O" mint mark of the New Orleans Mint.
Striking Liberty Design by George T. Morgan
This coin takes its name from its designer, George T. Morgan. Morgan broke with the tradition of depicting Liberty as a Greek-style figure, instead choosing Anna Willess Williams, an American-style figure, as his model. He shows her in left-side profile on the obverse. On her head are a Phrygian cap, a ribbon that bears an inscription of her name, and a crown. The cap identifies her as a freed slave, while the crown symbolizes national unity, as it consists of one Southern crop, cotton, and one Northern one, wheat. Encircling the image are two inscriptions, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "1898." The inscriptions are connected by thirteen stars, symbols of the original states.
On the reverse, a heraldic eagle spreads its wings. In its talons it holds arrows, which represent America's willingness to defend its values, and an olive branch, which expresses a desire for peace. The eagle is partially encircled by an open wreath. The national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is inscribed between its outstretched wings. Inscriptions along the rim provide the name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and the face value of the coin, "ONE DOLLAR."
Beautifully Preserved MS65
Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) awarded this coin a Mint State 65 grade. Coins in Mint State 65 condition were well struck and lack any traces of wear.
